Перипетии древнего Пафоса и его форта (окончание)

Завершаем рассказ о «городе-музее под открытым небом» – так называют территорию древнего Пафоса, которая с 1980 года находится под охраной ЮНЕСКО. Посещение таких мест предоставляет нам уникальную возможность прикоснуться к жизни древних цивилизаций и ощутить себя в потоке времени – бесконечности. 

Различные письменные источники, а также результаты археологических раскопок доказывают, что Пафос, который был основан в IV в. до н.э., был окружен высокими крепостными стенами. Стены эти возводились примерно в 320 году до н.э., во времена правления Никоклеса, последнего короля Пафоса.

В 323 году до н.э. великий завоеватель Александр Македонский скончался в Вавилоне в возрасте 32 лет, не дожив чуть более месяца до 33-летия и не оставив распоряжений о наследниках. Его друзья и соратники внезапно превратились во врагов, начав настоящую войну в борьбе за завоеванные территории. Александр Великий перекроил карту мира, но после его смерти империю растащили на удельные государства его военачальники – диадохи. Готовясь к нападению бывших соратников Александра, пафосский король Никоклес и начал окружать свой город высокими стенами.

Стены древнего города должны были защитить как сам город, так и городской порт. Поэтому они были подведены непосредственно к береговой линии, а юго-восточные и юго-западные волнорезы, которые возвышались на 4,5 метра над водой, являлись продолжением крепостных стен в море.

Согласно древним письменным источникам Пафос имел второй по величине порт после Саламиса. Также авторы летописей утверждают, что «Пафос имел тройной порт, защищенный от всех ветров» (Stadiasmus и Periplus Maris Magni, 297 г. до. н.э.). Возможно, этот порт был самым крупным на острове в то время, когда Пафос был столицей Кипра, в поздний период эллинизма и даже в римский период, то есть до 476 г. н.э.

Поскольку стены города были продолжением цепи прибрежных скал, то форма и высота строений были неодинаковы. Длина этих стен составляла примерно 1100 м с севера на юг и 1300 м с востока на запад, на них было возведено множество бастионов. Войти в город можно было только через ворота, трое из которых находились с северной стороны, и одни – с северо-восточной. В общей сложности городские стены окружали территорию площадью 950 000 кв. м.

Стены эти являлись защитой города не только в древние времена, но и когда островом правили византийцы (с IV в. н.э.). Важную роль они сыграли при арабских набегах. Подтверждением тому являются найденные археологами захоронения того времени: скелеты молодых солдат были сложены рядами в несколько слоев, один поверх другого. Многие части крепостных стен Пафоса просуществовали вплоть до конца XIX-го века! Они детально описаны в письменных источниках того времени (1888 г.). Сегодня, несмотря на то, что верхние части этих стен практически полностью разрушены, основания довольно хорошо сохранились.

С западной стороны стены начинались прямо от замка, стоящего на берегу моря, и тянулись вдоль всего городского побережья, повторяя его форму. На северо-западной границе города находились ворота, недалеко от которых возвышались две башни.

В этом районе до сих пор сохранились каменные «цистерны», в которых когда-то хранили запасы питьевой воды.

Море, которое сейчас находится примерно в пятидесяти метрах от западной стены, когда-то вплотную подходило к стенам города. Доказательством тому служат старые стены, словно бы изъеденные солеными волнами. Любопытно, что возле северо- западных ворот сохранился мост–скат длиной 36м и шириной 3.80м, который от ворот спускался прямо в море. Вероятно, это было место, где причаливали корабли.

На месте, где стены города поворачивают на восток, до сих пор сохранились развалины каменного бастиона и колодец, прорубленный в скалах. Вода этого колодца текла по специально вырубленной ложбинке и всегда обеспечивала жителей города водой, даже если часть города была захвачена неприятелем.

Недалеко от северных ворот города археологи обнаружили крытый подземный переход, в котором находилась потайная комната. Ученые предполагают, что все это сооружение (датируется IV в. до н.э.), выполняло функции святилища и военного укрытия.

Линию стен, продолжающихся за северными воротами, сейчас определить довольно сложно. Археологи утверждают, что в средние века на этом месте работал завод по переработке хлопка, и, вероятно, поэтому стены здесь были почти полностью разрушены. Возможно они использовались, как материал для строительства. Не исключено, что с этой же целью были разобраны и северо-восточные и восточные ворота города.

Скорее всего, расположение стен с восточной стороны старого Пафоса никогда не будет достоверно определено. В этом районы ученые обнаружили фрагменты фортификационных стен, поэтому можно только предполагать, где именно проходила граница города. Известно лишь, что толщина стен в том районе достигала 3,5-5 м.

Значение археологических находок в старом Пафосе, которые позволяют изучить жизнь цивилизации того времени, на международном уровне признали в 1980 году. Именно тогда и было принято решение взять древний город Пафос под охрану ЮНЕСКО, а территорию старого города – занести в список мировых культурных ценностей. В 1981 году на Кипр была отправлена группа международных экспертов, которые составили план дальнейших исследований территории Пафоса. Именно в то время на территории старого города был создан Археологический парк, по тропинкам которого мы можем пройти сегодня, любуясь прекрасными морскими видами, и, используя воображение, представить жизнь города две тысячи лет назад.

    1            Application of terms

    1.1        These Terms apply to your use of the Website. By accessing and using the Website:

    a            you agree to these Terms; and

    b            where your access and use is on behalf of another person (e.g. a company), you confirm that you are authorised to, and do in fact, agree to these Terms

    on that person’s behalf and that, by agreeing to these Terms on that person’s behalf, that person is bound by these Terms.

    3            Definitions

    In these Terms:

    Loss includes loss of profits, savings, revenue or data, and any other claim, damage, loss, liability and cost, including legal costs on a solicitor and own client basis

    personal information means information about an identifiable, living person

    Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

    Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

    You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

     

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    4.2        You must:

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

    4.3 You indemnify us against all Loss we suffer or incur as a direct or indirect result of your failure to comply with these Terms.
     

    5            Intellectual property

    We (and our licensors) own all proprietary and intellectual property rights in the Website (including all information, data, text, graphics, artwork, photographs, logos, icons, sound recordings, videos and look and feel), and the Underlying Systems.

    6.1        To the extent permitted by law, we and our licensors have no liability or responsibility to you or any other person for any Loss in connection with:

    8.1        You are not required to provide personal information to us, although in some cases if you choose not to do so then we will be unable to make certain sections of the Website available to you. For example, we may need to have your contact information in order to provide you with updates from our Website.

    and services to you, credit checks (if necessary), and research and development.

    10         General

    10.1      If we need to contact you, we may do so by email or by posting a notice on the Website. You agree that this satisfies all legal requirements in relation to written communications.

    10.2      These Terms, and any dispute relating to these Terms or the Website, are governed by and must be interpreted in accordance with the laws of the

    Republic of Cyprus.

    Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to any dispute connected with these Terms or the

    Website.

    10.3      For us to waive a right under these Terms, the waiver must be in writing.

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
