Как саранча пыталась захватить Кипр

В Средние века Кипр регулярно сталкивался с чудовищным бедствием — нашествием саранчи. Саранча, некоторые виды которой мигрируют с одного места в другое, могла уничтожить все посевы за очень короткий срок. Как жители острова боролись с насекомыми?

На острове живут несколько видов саранчи, которую здесь называют кипрским слово «скарни» (но в ходу также греческий термин «акрида»). Эти виды:
— мигрирующая марокканская саранча (Dociostaurus maroccanus) красноватого оттенка, самый распространенный на Кипре вид;
— египетская кобылка (Orthacanthacris aegyptia);
— вид Acrida turrita с тонким и длинным телом, конусообразной головой и длинными и тонкими задними лапами.

Первое подробное описание нашествия саранчи зафиксировано в летописях в 1351 году. Тогда для борьбы с саранчой антиохийский патриарх Игнатий, который проживал на Кипре, убедил короля Гуго IV написать иконы святых Христофора, Тарасия и Трифона. Иконы были выставлены в селении Палекитро, которое как раз переживало нашествие насекомых. В 1409 году случилось очередное нашествие, которое затормозило аграрную жизнь на Кипре на 3-4 года. В 1413 году король издал указ, который велел находить гнезда саранчи и закапывать их землей. В 1432 году, в год коронации короля Иоанна II, «ветер принес много саранчи» (так пишет Леонтий Махерас в своей летописи). При Иакове II в 1469-1470 годах саранча снова терзала Кипр, нашествие повторилось в 1473 году. Чтобы избавить от саранчи, король повелел завести на остров «птиц Магомета» (так на востоке называют аистов), чтобы те остановили распространение насекомых. Однако в одном венецианском документе 1474 года снова говорится, что саранча нанесла огромный ущерб. В 1510 году венецианские правители Кипра приказали крестьянам искать гнезда саранчи и уничтожать их, что дало хороший результат. В 1542 году нашествие саранчи совпало с разрушительным землетрясением.

В годы турецкого владычества главным средством борьбы с напастью стали крестные ходы и молебны. Для этих целей с Афона даже привезли честную главу святого Михаила Синадского, ее использовали для того, чтобы освятить воду, с помощью которой планировалось изгнать с Кипра всю саранчу.

Кипр использовал мощи для борьбы с саранчой?

Сама история с транспортировкой головы св. Михаила стоит того, чтобы рассказать о ней отдельно, так как это был настоящий дипломатический успех. В 1628 году архиепископ Кипрский Христодул поручил видному ученому и интеллектуалу того времени, иеромонаху Матфею Кигаласу, отправиться в Константинополь и договориться о том, чтобы патриарх Кирилл Лукарис благословил перенесение главы св. Михаила с Афона на Кипр. Прибыв в столицу Высокой Порты, Кигалас сперва столкнулся с отказом, но ему удалось заручиться поддержкой турецких чиновников Мустафы-паши и Хусейна Тефтерара, которые владели на Кипре землей и сами были заинтересованы в избавлении от саранчи. С помощью их ходатайства Матфей получил благословение патриарха и отправился на Афон за главой, которую и привез на Кипр, захватив заодно святую воду, освященную Константинопольским и другими восточными патриархами. Архиепископ Христодул объехал с главой весь остров, везде совершая молебны об избавлении от насекомых. Позже главу вернули на Афон.

В 1740 архиепископ Кипрский Филофей снова запросил реликвию у афонитов, но те предложили ему приехать за ней лично. Следующие попытки (тоже неудачные) получить голову святого была предпринята архиепископом Паисием в 1757 и 1759 годах. Отчаявшись, киприоты решили довольствоваться тем, что есть на острове, и в 1778 году провели всекипрский крестный ход с главой апостола Филиппа, которая хранилась в Арсосе (сегодня находится в Омодосе). Однако не только православные использовали разные полумагические обряды. Турки-киприоты, например, верили, что саранчу прогоняет вода из колодца Замзам в Мекке.

Другие мифы и теории

Стоит ли говорить, что религиозные методы плохо помогали, поэтому к началу XIX века на Кипре возобладала вера в зомби-апокалипсис саранчи: будто бы саранча бессмертна, и чем больше ее убиваешь, тем больше ее становится. Архиепископ Киприан даже выпустил специальное послание, в котором говорилось, что саранча отличается каннибализмом и поедает своих мертвых сородичей, поэтому со стороны может казаться, что мертвые насекомые воскресают и продолжают уничтожать посевы. Впрочем, архиепископ Киприан не сумел сменить методологию борьбы с насекомыми и просто велел писать больше икон св. Трифона и чаще служить ему молебны, так как считалось, что св. Трифон прогоняет вредителей.

В 1862 году турецкий правитель острова Зиа-паша постановил бороться с саранчой с помощью воды из Мекки. Но когда он увидел, что турецкие купцы привезли ему столько воды, сколько не было во всем священном колодце, и предложили правителю купить у них ее за огромные деньги, Зиа-паша обратился к более практичным мерам: он обязал каждого налогоплательщика сдать по 30 окк яиц саранчи, то есть около 38,5 кг. Благодаря этому было уничтожено колоссальное количество гнезд саранчи. Однако эта мера была однократной, и к 1870 году остров снова страдал от нашествия насекомых.

Способ Рихардоса Маттеи

Вся это продолжалось до 1870 года, когда к правителю Кипра Саид-паше обратился Рихардос Маттеи, киприот знатного происхождения из богатой греко-итальянской семьи. Маттеи предложил свой собственный метод борьбы с саранчей, а именно, заливать гнезда воском или закладывать пропитанной воском тканью. Однако меры снова не были системными, и к 1880 году саранча вернулась. Англичане, которые к тому моменту управляли островом, снова обратились к Маттеи и тот посвятил их в свое ноу-хау, за что был награжден колониальной администрацией накануне своей смерти 18 июня 1882 года. Англичане поставили борьбу с саранчой на поток и смогли полностью вывести насекомых на Кипре.

    1            Application of terms

    3            Definitions

    In these Terms:

    Loss includes loss of profits, savings, revenue or data, and any other claim, damage, loss, liability and cost, including legal costs on a solicitor and own client basis

    personal information means information about an identifiable, living person

    Terms means these terms and conditions titled Terms and conditions of use

    Underlying System means any network, system, software, data or material that underlies or is connected to the Website

    We, us or our means VESTNIK KIPRA Group

    You means you or, if clause 1.1b applies, both you and the other person on whose behalf you are acting.

     

    4            Your obligations

    4.1        You must provide true, current and complete information in your dealings with us and must promptly update that information as required so that the

    information remains true, current and complete.

    4.2        You must:

    a not act in a way, or use or introduce anything (including any virus, worm, Trojan horse, timebomb, keystroke logger, spyware or other similar feature) that in any way compromises, or may compromise, the Website or any Underlying System, or otherwise attempt to damage or interfere with the Website or any Underlying System; and

    b unless with our agreement, access the Website via standard web browsers only and not by any other method. Other methods include scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, use of a robot or spider, automation, or any similar data gathering, extraction or monitoring method.

    4.3 You indemnify us against all Loss we suffer or incur as a direct or indirect result of your failure to comply with these Terms.

    10         General

    10.1      If we need to contact you, we may do so by email or by posting a notice on the Website. You agree that this satisfies all legal requirements in relation to written communications.

    10.2      These Terms, and any dispute relating to these Terms or the Website, are governed by and must be interpreted in accordance with the laws of the

    Republic of Cyprus.

    Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to any dispute connected with these Terms or the

    Website.

    10.3      For us to waive a right under these Terms, the waiver must be in writing.

    10.4      Clauses which, by their nature, are intended to survive termination of these Terms, including clauses 5, 6, 7, 10.1, continue in force.

    10.5      If any part or provision of these Terms is or becomes illegal, unenforceable, or invalid, that part or provision is deemed to be modified to the extent

    required to remedy the illegality, unenforceability or invalidity. If a modification is not possible, the part or provision must be treated for all purposes as

    severed from these Terms. The remainder of these Terms will be binding on you.

    10.6      These Terms set out everything agreed by the parties relating to your use of the Website and supersede and cancel anything discussed, exchanged or

    agreed prior to you agreeing to these Terms. The parties have not relied on any representation, warranty or agreement relating to the Website that is not

    expressly set out in the Terms, and no such representation, warranty or agreement has any effect from the date you agreed to these Terms.
